Storage Solutions for International Moves: Origin, Destination & Long-Term

← Back to all articles

Storage needs arise at two points in almost every international move: before you leave (origin storage) and after you arrive (destination storage). Both have very different cost structures and risk profiles.

Origin Storage (Before You Leave)

If you're moving out of your home before your container is loaded — for example, if your lease ends before your pack date — your mover can provide short-term storage in their warehouse. Your goods are packed and held until your scheduled load date. Costs vary but typically run $0.50–$1.50 per cubic foot per month in the US. On a 500 cubic foot shipment, that's $250–$750/month.

Destination Storage (After You Arrive)

If your home overseas isn't ready when your shipment arrives (new apartment not yet available, renovations running late), your mover's destination agent will hold your shipment in a warehouse until your scheduled delivery date. Costs are similar to origin storage — typically $0.50–$1.50 per cubic foot per month. On a 500 cubic foot shipment, that's $250–$750/month.

Container Storage

Some movers offer "container storage" — your belongings remain sealed inside their original container on a secure lot rather than being transferred to a warehouse. This reduces handling (and potential damage from loading/unloading), but limits your ability to access individual items. It's often more cost-effective than warehouse storage for mid-length storage periods of 1–6 months.

Long-Term Storage for Expatriates

If you're not sure when you'll need your belongings shipped — for example, if you're on a temporary assignment that may or may not become permanent — several companies specialize in long-term storage for expatriates and military families. These offer climate control, inventory management, and periodic access. Rates are typically lower per month than moving company warehouses ($0.25–$0.60 per cubic foot/month), with better access policies.

Questions to Ask Your Mover About Storage

Plan for a Storage Gap — It's More Common Than You Think

Most international moves involve at least a short storage period either at origin or destination. Build it into your budget: even two weeks of warehouse storage on a 2-bedroom shipment can run $300–$600. Ask your mover to quote storage separately so you're not surprised by it on the final invoice.
