How to Estimate Your Shipment Volume & Weight Before Contacting Movers

← Back to all articles

Knowing your approximate shipment size before you contact movers puts you in a much stronger position — you'll be able to compare quotes accurately and spot low-ball estimates designed to increase later.

Rough Volume Estimates by Home Size

Home SizeCubic Feet (approx.)Cubic Meters (approx.)Container Type
Studio / 1BR minimal150–300 cu ft4–8 m³LCL (2–4 lift vans)
1–2BR furnished300–600 cu ft8–17 m³LCL or small FCL
2–3BR home600–1,000 cu ft17–28 m³20ft FCL
3–4BR home1,000–1,500 cu ft28–42 m³40ft FCL
4BR+ large home1,500+ cu ft42+ m³40ft FCL or multiple

These are loose guidelines — a furnished studio packed with books, kitchen equipment, and a home office will vary significantly from a minimalist one. A book collection alone can add hundreds of pounds.

Cubic Feet vs. Cubic Meters

Most American movers quote in cubic feet; international shipping is typically measured in cubic meters. The conversion: 1 cubic meter = 35.3 cubic feet. A standard 20-foot shipping container holds approximately 1,150 cubic feet (33 m³) of usable space; a 40-foot container holds approximately 2,350 cubic feet (67 m³), but practical loading reduces usable space by 10–15%.

How Movers Estimate Your Volume

A reputable international mover will conduct an in-home or video survey before issuing a quote. They count and measure furniture, estimate box counts per room, and assess any specialty items. Two types of quotes result:

Weight: Less Important Than You Think (for Sea Freight)

For sea freight, volume is the primary pricing driver for household goods — personal effects are relatively light. A full 20-foot container of household goods typically weighs 8,000–15,000 lbs (3,600–6,800 kg), well within the 44,000-lb capacity. Weight matters more for air freight, where it interacts with volumetric weight calculations.

Do a Room-by-Room Pass Before Calling Movers

Walk through each room and note every large item you're shipping (furniture, appliances, large electronics) plus an estimated box count. Movers estimate 3 cu ft per medium box. This 15-minute exercise will make your quote conversations much more productive and accurate.
